Podcast Summary

We're very excited to bring you our very first podcast episode. You'll have to forgive us for the "not so fancy" editing in the introduction. But heck, you're not here to listen to fancy intros but to learn about actions other introverts have taken to help them be successful.

In this episode, Stuart shares with us the actions he's taken and his views on some of the myths some introverts hold onto, which limit their level of success. Introverts look at things differently to extroverts. Particularly at senior levels where extrovert personalities dominate, a different view is fundamental to the group's success.

About the Leader

Stuart Cameron is the Chief Risk Officer looking after Financial, and Enterprise Risk. He is a highly respected leader within the organization and is open about his introversion and the actions he's taken to help him break out of his introvert limitations.

The key notes we took away were:

  • If you struggle to speak up in meetings, ask the meeting leader to invite you into the conversation. You can adapt the environment to make it easier for you to speak up. Good leaders always want differing views.
  • Don't be outcome focused. Contributing your point of view and putting your hand up is more valuable than the success or failure of the point itself.
  • The different view offered by introverts is valued by others. Use this truism to help boost your self confidence and help you speak up.
  • Introverts can contribute significantly to meetings, not just in the form of facts or technical points, but in balancing out the dynamics of the room and bringing a different perspective.
  • The only person who worries about a 'useless' point you've raised or a point that's taken the meeting to a divergent path is you. Everyone else has already moved on.

Most memorable quote

Always put your hand up or your point forward. Whatever the outcome is, successful or not successful, you haven’t lost anything. You don’t have to be concerned with what other people think.
